How Music Can Enforce Or Challenge Power - 936 Words

Throughout the last two week of lecture, I have learnt that there are numerous ways where music can enforce or challenge power. Throughout the years, â€Å"music has always been an integral part of displays of political power, conveying national identity and official ideologies through symbolic acts.† The major three general ways how music can enforce or challenge power is through by the language and text that is use for the lyrics, the historical background of the piece, and where the piece was performed. When the apartheid ended in 1990s and the New South Africa era started, there was a problem with the national anthem. In 1997, a new combined anthem mixes â€Å"Nkosi sikelel’ iAfrika† with â€Å"Die Stem van Suid Afrika† and the lyrics in four languages: Zulu, Xhosa, Afrikaans, and English. The lyrics employ the four most widely spoken of South Africa’s official languages to represent the diversity in South Africa. â€Å"Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika† (Lord, Bless Africa) was adopted by the African National Congress (ANC) in 1925 as the official closing hymn of the organization. It has a long historical context behind the song. During this period, South Africa was in huge racial discrimination between the Native and the Whites. This hymn was a link to resistance from early on. Bob Marley’s â€Å"Zimbabwe† lyrics is important. It had inspired Zimbabwe National Liberation Army during their struggle for independence â€Å"Every man gotta right to decide his own destiny.
